Scotland has always been a nation of innovators, creators and entrepreneurs. From family-run independents to tech pioneers, businesses of all shapes and sizes are the backbone of our economy. But every successful business starts somewhere, often with one person, one idea and one first step.
That is why throughout September we were proud to support Scottish Start-Up Month, a campaign from Business Gateway that shone a spotlight on Scotland’s entrepreneurial spirit and encouraged people across the country to take the leap into starting their own business, with the reassurance that free advice and tailored support is available.
Starting a business can feel overwhelming and the leap from idea to reality often comes with more questions than answers. Business Gateway helps bridge that gap by offering one-to-one guidance from experienced local advisers, practical online resources and tools such as Planning to Start, which gives new founders a clear starting point. Campaigns like Scottish Start-Up Month help showcase these services, inspiring the next generation of business owners and showing that no one has to take the journey alone.
The scale of Scotland’s entrepreneurial drive is clear. Last year, 6,810 new businesses launched with help from Business Gateway, part of the thousands that start each year across the country. Over the past five years, more than 200,000 businesses and individuals have benefited from its support, delivered locally by over 350 advisers in 32 offices nationwide. These figures highlight both the appetite for enterprise in Scotland and the importance of accessible, expert guidance in turning ideas into reality.
This year BIG is celebrating its 25th anniversary. Contrary to our name, we started out as a team of three and know first-hand the challenges that come with making that first BIG step. We also understand how vital advice and support can be in those early days, which is why Scottish Start-Up Month resonated so strongly with us.
At BIG, we see the power of enterprise every day. We know the value of fresh ideas and the positive impact new businesses can have on communities and the wider economy. That’s why we were proud to share our support throughout the month and why we’ll continue to back initiatives that encourage Scotland’s entrepreneurs to explore their ambitions and take that first step.
